Mortensen was born into the wrestling business and began to train at an early age under her father Fred and brother Leo. She would then make her debut against her brother at a carnival in 1925. Mortensen then began to tour with her growing fame, being billed as the “Tigress,” for her fit and athletic look at a time when wrestlers were of larger stature.

She would eventually capture her first world title after defeating Barbara Ware for the vacant Women’s World Title, that would kick off a streak of victories for up to five years. It wasn’t until 1937 she would drop the title versus Mildred Burke after a series of matches the two previously had. Clara would eventually recapture the title and continue to wrestle until her eventual retirement in 1951 in the state of California. She finished her career with an impressive record of 224 wins and 10 losses.
