On Thursday, March 30, 2023, Tony had a media call to talk about ROH and the Supercard of Honor PPV. During the call, many interesting things were mentioned such as:
The video package discusses the rivalry between Claudio Castagnoli and Eddie Kingston. He wanted to give insight into the history, but also show the new stuff and updates the history. He said Joseph Montecillo was the brains behind the video package.
Tony also mentioned Bandido making a splash going forward in both AEW and ROH.
When asked if he would be scouting for talent this weekend, he said he would as he always watched indie promotions throughout the year and would like to see those who slip under the radar possibly being in AEW and he is excited about the prospects.
With regard to the “Reach for the Sky” ladder match, Tony said that Mark Briscoe didn’t want to participate in tag team wrestling anymore, but would be okay with trio work or singles work. He also liked the idea of the ladder match. Tony said he is looking forward to Mark’s singles career in AEW and ROH.
Tony said when it comes to booking both AEW and ROH; he told Kenny Omega that booking ROH left him more invigorated to do more great stuff in both shows. He also had a huge announcement for AEW Dynamite at the UBS arena.
Now, I was able to get the second question asked. My question was “With this new iteration of Ring of Honor, what do you have going forward for the women’s wrestlers on the roster not only for this PPV but going forward with a new iteration of Ring of Honor?
This is what Tony had to say:
“Well, I’m very excited about what we’ve been able to do with some stars and Ring of Honor since I purchased it. I think we’ve had some amazing matches and some of the best matches on the show have been involving the women’s roster in particular. I thought the main event of the second episode of our weekly TV, Athena versus Willow Nightingale was one of the best matches we’ve had periods in Ring of Honor TV or pay-per-view. And it was a great main event and it got a lot of people talking a lot of positive vibes about the product and of the company. On the Champion and challenger, everybody really wanted that magic when Athena did come out with a victory and became the champion. She is wrestling again tonight against Emi Sakura on the ROH weekly show and then we are going to continue with a big title match on the pay-per-view as well. I’m very excited about that. And there’s just a lot to be looking forward to I think on the roster right now. Because if you watch the weekly shows, I think fans have seen a number of great women’s matches and people with potential people that have wrestled in AEW and also some that hadn’t appeared in much in AEW. It’s also introduced a lot of people I believe to some younger wrestlers that are doing great things. And for wrestlers that are homegrown AEW stars, like Skye Blue. It’s also been great to give them opportunities in Ring of Honor, where there’s different, it’s the same expectation to go out and have a great match, but it’s a little bit of a different format and there aren’t the constraints of live television or commercial breaks and it’s a different type of formatting. I’m targeting more of a hardcore base so I can do things that will I think help everybody. It’s been one of the reasons why Ring of Honor is such a great complementary product for AEW to cater to hardcore fans and circumvent some aspects of traditional wrestling television which with less pressure on all of us in some ways. It makes it even easier to focus on and deliver great wrestling shows like we’ve been doing our way including a lot of the great winning matches we’ve had. And I’m looking forward to the PPV for a number of reasons including the Women’s Championship match and where it’s going to leave us going forward for Ring of Honor TV as we set up next week. And continue this really new journey our way. Next week will be public television. It’ll be the first time we’ve done it coming off of a PPV. So we’ll be filming the show in New York next week. And, this is a huge Pay Per View event in Los Angeles. I think the women in ROH have played a great role including like I said, in one of the first TV shows having a great Main Event match with Athena and Willow but also came back after another great match and I expect to have a great match with Athena tonight against Emi Sakura.”
Unfortunately, there was only one other question about the women, which he already answered in the question I asked. Otherwise, the media call had some good info.
Again, you can check out Supercard of Honor on Friday, March 31, 2023.
