Trish Stratus Opens Up About Upcoming WrestleMania 39 Match
Trish Stratus is undoubtedly a legend in women’s professional wrestling and one of her greatest rivalries of all time was with Lita. The pair were slated to have a match at WrestleMania 21 in 2005 in Los Angeles, California, but the bout never came to be after Lita suffered an injury. Now, eighteen years later, the pair are set to join forces with one another alongside Becky Lynch in a six-woman tag team match against Damage CTRL on The Grandest Stage of Them All, and Stratus has reflected on the journey that has led up to it in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated.
“We were so disappointed to lose that singles match,” Stratus said. “We’d been working toward that WrestleMania. I was driven to reach a new point in my wrestling, and I geared up for that moment. Who would have thought we’d have this match now? We’ve mostly been rivals, so it’s cool that we’re teamed up. We’ve been best friends since the very beginning. I feel so honored and blessed that I can do this with my very best friend. My ring is set up in Toronto, so I’ll be ready for WrestleMania.”
Stratus returned on the February 27 episode of Raw, during which she provided a hand to reigning WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Becky Lynch and Lita to defeat Damage CTRL to win the titles. Prior to then, she hadn’t been seen since she came up short against SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair at Summerslam 2019 in her hometown of Toronto.
“I’ll only come back if it’s fun,” Stratus said. “I’m taking time away from my businesses and my babies. I love passing the torch and passing on my knowledge. It’s the little things that make a superstar. Was I the greatest wrestler? I don’t know, but I knew how to make people take notice. I loved that about working with Charlotte. When you hear Sasha Banks or Charlotte or Nattie [Natalya Neidhart] talk about our influence, that makes me go, ‘Oh s—. I want to keep doing this, and now with them.'”
Trish Stratus also mentioned the reaction from the crowd in Grand Rapids and how much more special it made the moment for her.
