The Kiwi Brawler: Dakota Kai

A trailblazer of NXT, Dakota Kai continues to demonstrate her dominance and unique ability in wrestling. In addition, she is a Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winner and a two-time NXT Women’s Tag Team Champion. She has participated in WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, and Evolution, WWE’s first all women’s pay-per-view.

As many know Dakota Kai in WWE, she wrestled in other promotions all over the world under the ring name Evie. The name was inspired mostly by her favorite Pokemon, Eevee.

Evie Begins To Evolve

The New Zealand native is no stranger to the world of wrestling, traveling the world with her talent. Her first days of wrestling date back to the year 2007 in Impact Pro Wrestling. During her time there, she becomes the first Impact Pro Wrestling NZ Women’s Champion.

She is a former Interim PWWA Champion and former IPW Women’s Champion, becoming the first female wrestler to receive a contract from Pro Wrestling Zero1 in Japan. She debuted in Shimmer Women Athletes and Shine Wrestling in April 2013, going on to face the likes of Mercedes Martinez, Mia Yim, and Hikaru Shida.

In 2015, she makes her debut in World Wonder Ring Stardom, a notable Japanese promotion. In her debut match, with her partnership with Kellie Skater and Hiroyo Matsumoto, they become the Artist of Stardom Champions. That same year, she makes her first WWE appearance as a new journey unfolds.

Dakota Kai Becomes The Biggest Heel In NXT

During her first moments in NXT, she keeps her original ring name, Evie. When the participants of the Mae Young Classic were revealed, she was announced as Dakota Kai. The significance of her name displays her Samoan heritage while demonstrating the attributes of her character.

In the first-ever women’s NXT WarGames match, Dakota decides to make the biggest heel turn in NXT history. This moment redefines her character, becoming a force of destruction to anyone standing in her way. Her pairing with Raquel Rodriguez gave her even more power in the division, displaying the ultimate dominance.

As Dakota Kai departs from WWE, we will be watching to see her next journey. Be sure to check out more women’s wrestlers featured in Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month here at Women’s Wrestling Talk.
